Join us for an evening of poetry and literature, as mother-daughter duo Zeenat Hisam and Nudrat Kamal, discuss Zeenat’s new book of translated poetry of North American women in Urdu!

They will discuss Zeenat’s thoughts on translation, on the place of world literature and poetry in the Urdu literary sphere, and on her process of putting together this collection. Zeenat and Nudrat will also read out poems from Zeenat’s book, Tammanaon Ke Diyar Se—from the celebrated greats such as Emily Dickienson and Maya Angelou to contemporary poets such as Joy Harjo, Ada Limon, Hala Alyan, Aria Aber, and more.

Join us as Nudrat and Zeenat reflect on the poems’ exploration of self, nature, and desire through the intersections of race, class, and gender. Translating these poems into Urdu has made Zeenat feel closer to her own language and she hopes it does the same for its readers.
